Val d’Aran is an area in Catalonia that was largely isolated until 1948 when a tunnel was built through the mountain, linking it to the rest of Spain. Today it still maintains its own strong sense of identity, with its own culture, cuisine and language (Aranese). Be ready for the food and wine experiences.
Surrounding the resort of Baqueira-Beret are vast areas of untouched wilderness perfect for ski touring.
Due to Atlantic influence, Val d’Aran often enjoys some of the best snow coverage in Europe. The resort of Baqueira Beret recently recorded a hefty base of 400cm when lifts closed at the end of the season. As well as getting plenty of snow, the area also gets plenty of sunshine, and therefore perfect for ski touring. During January and February, prepare for cold conditions, with daytime temperatures often reaching -5 to -10. It warms up in March, and conditions can be variable, from perfect powder, to spring conditions.
Getting There & Around
Fly direct into Toulouse, France, then rent a car — you’ll need one to make the most of the valley. Toulouse is three-hour drive from Baqueira Beret. Barcelona’s airport is about four hours away, San Sebastián, four hours away in the Basque Country, is another good add-on. Parking in the ski resort and the villages is easy and usually free.
